A few pictures of the head work done at Fox Lake this past month. This is their Stage II porting/polishing program, with larger valves and heavier duty springs.

Next up will be cams, pistons and the all important tune.

Very cool. Which cams are you planning on using? I was using the Comp XE270AH cams on my 5.4L 2V engine I had in my red '00. I liked that a lot, but probably could have gotten away with something a little larger, mostly because the extra long stroke of the 5.4L shifted the power band down about 1000 rpm from where it would have been on the 4.6L. If you have not already picked this up, a great reference guide to making power in a ford modular is in this book: www.amazon.com/Building-5-4L-Ford-Horsep...ords=4.6+ford+engine
The author really liked using the Comp 274 cam for power. Good luck with your build, and Im looking forward to seeing what your results are.

I had not seen that book before - thanks, looks like a good reference.

My plan is to bias the motor power high in the rpm band, and put the rev limiter at 6900rpm. So with the Stage II heads, I'll use the Comp XE278AH cams. I won't have high power down low, but I won't mind that since the engine is rarely below 3500rpm on track. The 274 cams would be better for overall use but would make less power above 6000rpm.

The higher rpms lets me extend 4th gear for long straights, and it may help eliminate the quick 3-4-3 shifts on some track straights when I run out of 3rd gear.

I'm looking forward to the dyno results too :) I expect peak HP to be around 330-340, and a nice wide band of solid power from 3,500-6,900 rpm. That's almost a 50% increase in the rpm band size.

Motor is done and car is tucked back in my garage.

It ended up needing a full refreshing on the bottom end as well. The block was decked, bored slightly, torque plate honed, and several thin aligning hone cuts made for the crank. So everything is now round, planer and/or trued up. New main bearings installed, with the 10:1 Mahle pistons, rings and wrist pins. The XE278AH cams are in with the Stage II heads. The stock 19 lb injectors were replaced with 42 lb.

While this was apart I talked with the shop about the clutch chatter (slight), and turns out they aren't a big fan of Spec clutches - they've seen more problems with that make than others. So I went to a new Centerforce clutch and pressure plate. It is a LOT smoother and easier than the Spec.

I haven't done much with it other than trailering it home and driving it around the block. I'll change out the break in oil next month when the weather is warmer and I can put in the heavier oil I use.

Dyno results and tuning came out well, I think. The chassis dyno numbers are low - this shop has a Mustang dyno, and after some parts of the dyno were replaced the shop found a 400-500 hp car reads some 10-15% lower on the dyno than before. If I add 10% to my chassis dyno numbers it comes in around what I expected.

Chassis: 297 hp around 6100rpm. 296 ft-lbs around 4700 rpm. But the best part is the flat hp curve - I have 80% or more of the max hp value from 4300 to 6900 rpm. Very wide, very flat power band. I lost power and torque below 3500 rpm but that won't matter on track.

If I add 10% to 297 that's 327 hp, which is pretty good. I think if I had changed the throttle body from 70mm to 75mm I would have gotten more (maybe 10 hp more).

The car previously dyno'd 275 hp max, around 4800 rpm, with the old dyno calibration/set up. By 6000 rpm it was falling off quickly.

Engine dyno: 375 ft-lbs torque at 4000 rpm (max), and 373 hp at 5800 rpm (max). In the 3500-4600 band, the average is 369 ft-lb and 285 hp. 4700-6500 is about 360 hp average.

That's the data, but what really dropped my jaw was the sound. I didn't change my exhaust (I already have mid length headers, X-pipe and a catback) but the car sounds nothing like it did before. I always like the growl of the 4V Mach 1's, Bullits and Cobras, and now I have something similar. All I can say is my first thought was, "what have I done?" after I drove it on the trailer.

I have a video on the Vimeo website ( https://vimeo.com/59795733 and password is Nine9gT). It's of the car idling with a couple of blips to 3000 rpm. When it was warmed up in the garage, I did blip it to 5500 with my hand pushing the throttle. It was amazing how freely it spun from 3500 to 5500!

Can't wait for a test day at Nelson Ledges come April. This is my first foray into power with the car :woohoo: , as everything else has been handling, braking and safety and driver skills.

Not sure how many of you will be at Mid-Ohio this Monday (6/30), but I'll be there - first event with 3 Balls since 2012.

I'm told it sounds great from outside the car :P
